In an emergency, can I use anything other than flour to refresh my sourdough starter?

You will discover a range of ways in which to refresh your starter if flour is at a shortage. You will be able to make a decision about which method is best for you given what you have available at home.

Learning Outcome

You can now go about refreshing your starter in a way that suits you if you don't currently have access to flour. You will now be able to assess the pros and cons of using different ingredients for refreshment of your starter.

 

There are times when, for one reason or another, you might not have enough flour in the house to refresh a starter. It may be that you are building your starter up but can't make it to shops that day, or it could be that your local shop has sold out.

Here, Vanessa explores the ways in which you can refresh and build your sourdough starter without using wheat flour (Triticum aestivum).
